Hijama in Religion

Hijama is a cure for mankind as the following Hadiths state:

  • “Jibreel (Angel Gabriel) has informed me that Hijama Cupping is the most useful medication for people.” stated by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as reported by Abu-Hurayrah. (Sahih ul-Jami #218)

  • The Prophet (PBUH) explained that Hijama is one of the best medicines: “The best medicine with which you treat yourselves is Hijama, or it is one of the best of your medicines,” or “The best treatment you can use is Hijama.” [Al Bukhari #5371]

  • The Prophet (PBUH) also said: “If there is anything good in the medicines with which you treat yourselves, it is in the incision of the Hijama therapist, or a drink of honey or cauterization with fire, but I do not like to be cauterized.” [Muslim #2205]

  • The Prophet (PBUH) said: “The best treatment is Hijama; it removes blood, lightens the back and sharpens the eyesight.” [At Tirmidhi #3053]

  • “…Jinn enter the body and run in one’s blood till it reaches the brain and controls the signals of the mind, cupping which means getting blood out of its stream is the solution…” Ibn Al- Qayyim al Jawziyyah (At Tibb an Nabawy-pg 82)

  • “I did not pass by an angel from the angels on the night journey except that they all said to me; ‘upon you is Hijama cupping, O Muhammad’ ”. [Saheeh Sunan ibn Maajah (3477)]

  • The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said: “Whoever performs cupping on the 17th, 19th or 21st day (of the Islamic lunar month) then it is a cure for every disease.” (Saheeh Sunan Abi Dawud, 3861)

Why is it so important to try to adhere to performing hijama therapy on the Sunnah days of 17th, 19th and 21st of the lunar month?

The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said: “Whoever performs cupping on the 17th, 19th or 21st day (of the Islamic lunar month) then it is a cure for every disease.” (Saheeh Sunan Abi Dawud, 3861)

Anas ibn Maalik reported that the Messenger (pbuh) said, "Whoever wants to perform cupping (hijama) then let him search for the 17th, 19th and 21st…" [Saheeh Sunan ibn Maajah (3486)].

Ibn Umar reported that the Messenger (pbuh) said, "Cupping (hijama) on an empty stomach is best. It increases the intellect and improves the memory. It improves the memory of the one memorising. So whoever is going to be cupped then (let it be) on a Thursday in the name of Allah.  Keep away from being cupped on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Be cupped on a Monday or Tuesday. Do not be cupped on a Wednesday because it is the day that Ayoub was befallen with a trial. You will not find leprosy except (by being cupped) on Wednesday or Wednesday night." [Saheeh Sunan ibn Maajah (3488)].

The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) advised us with the best days for Hijama in order for us to benefit the most. There lies wisdom behind every command or prohibition in Islam. We have to stick to these rules so that we don’t get harmed; either the rule has a scientific or spiritual background. So, if Hijama is not performed on the recommended days, instead of receiving benefits out of it, the body will react negatively. The blood will lose healthy red and white blood cells and lymph fluids unnecessarily. This can weaken and tiring the body.

The moon plays a very important role for the Hijama treatment. Because of its gravitational pull on the earth it has a great impact on all living creatures. It has been noticed that certain stages of the moon increase sexual activity, reproduction and aggression. Fishes for example produce more eggs in certain periods of the moon phases. A LA police officer stated that the crime rates rise during full moon. Tides depend on the moon. The human body experiences changes, too. Therefore we have the recommended times to perform Hijama. The moon and the levels of the four fluids humours (black and yellow bile, phlegm and blood) inside the body play a very important role. The fluids are in turmoil during full moon. Thus, Hijama is not advisable at this time. If it is administered at the least recommended times, like start or middle of the lunar month, the strong pull of the moon will irritate the blood as it is not ready to release imbalanced fluids and the body might get weak. The moon begins to decrease from the 17th to 27th day. This is the perfect time to perform Hijama as the imbalanced fluids and the toxic, unhealthy blood have risen to the surface, ready to get expelled. Thus, Wet Cupping should be performed on odd days of the lunar month in order to benefit from it most. The 17th, 19th and 21st days are the best when coincide with a Monday, Tuesday or Thursday. It should be performed on an empty stomach.

Electromagnetic energies also influence our wellbeing. All living creatures, including human beings, have an electromagnetic field around them that generate electromagnetic energies which is affected by the moon. When we prostrate during our Salah we ground ourselves and release pressure in our skulls and excessive negative energy through our forehead and crown. Blood and oxygen will nourish our brain. When we go into Sujood we come closer to our Creator. The Prophet (pbuh) said: “The closest that a servant is to his Lord is when he is in prostration.” (Muslim) We will benefit the most in our lives when we are in harmony with our Creator by following the Quran and Sunnah.
